Introducing the Clinical Leadership 360

Welcome to the Clinical Leadership 360 – a multisource feedback tool for leadership development.

We developed the Clinical Leadership 360 in partnership with London Deanery and its purpose is to help clinicians to learn more about and develop their leadership effectiveness. The tool is web-based and provides participants with a bound, collated report on their leadership behaviours, with an emphasis on how they engage others.

The programme provides an ideal starting point in order to develop effective leadership behaviours by increasing your self-awareness and understanding of the impact of your behaviour on others.

The CL360 is a major development for leaders working within the health sector, and the first validated 360 tool of its kind.

Strong leadership among clinicians is essential to effective patient care and a healthy NHS. In High Quality of Care for All, NHS Next Stage Review Final Report (2008) Lord Darzi states:

“Making change actually happen takes leadership. It is central to turn expectations of the healthcare professionals of tomorrow.”

In today’s NHS, staff and doctors face increasing pressure to achieve ‘more with less’ and meet ever-more demanding targets while continuing to ensure patient safety. The good news is that there is increasing evidence to suggest that certain leadership behaviours create situations where staff want to give more, and where people feel enabled to cope with changing circumstances and demands.

These behaviours have been researched over ten years by Prof Beverly Alimo-Metcalfe and her team and are described as “engaging transformational leadership”. Unique, longitudinal study in the NHS has also shown that this leadership style leads to greater:

• Commitment
• Productivity
• Reduction of job-related stress

This leadership model has been translated into a 360-degree feedback instrument specifically for clinicians, the Clinical Leadership 360 (CL360), a unique tool created for clinicians by Real World Group in collaboration with London Deanery. It enables trainees and other clinicians to learn more about and develop their leadership effectiveness.
